Oeconomica is a modern board game with educational goals. The realistic representation of basic micro economical aspects in Oeconomica help the players, adults or children, visualise, revise and consolidate the knowledge of principles of business economy.
Oeconomica is based on a combination of two game mechanisms. The first of them is price formation on the market. The game shows the mutual influence of supply and demand. Both supply and demand are formed by the players through their decisions in the game. The actual price reflects the currently simulated ratio of supply and demand on the market. The second axis is represented by business operations. The players need to respond to the current market price, plan their investments and optimise production.
In the game, like in the real world, money is a medium of exchange. The players invest in companies, expand and improve production, buy inputs and sell outputs for their market price. The development of the game gives them valuable feedback on how they responded to market trends. If the trends are not favourable, it is necessary to change strategy and often even restructure the entire company. The players can use their own capital or loans. If they take a loan, they need to pay the interest in every round, until they repay the loan.
The players can also invest in community service projects which increases their social status. This enriches the game with the subject of philanthropy and corporate social responsibility.
